Death as a Friend - A key to Life

Graduate Training Course

Life and Loss: A Therapist's Guide to Embracing Death

We come out of mystery - being born, and we will return to mystery - dying, that’s the only thing we can be sure off. We come into form, and we shift back to the formless just like everything in nature.

In our culture, life and death are kept divided which has consequence on how we see death and how we live our life. We often treat death as an enemy, something to fear and be anxious about. Something to overcome with the wish to live as long as possible. We mostly live life built on forgetfulness and denial.  Unless you are suddenly faced with death, by a loss of a loved one, or your own realization of your

mortality, you suddenly wake up and have the opportunity to befriend death, making it part of your life. Death defines our existence here and gives it shape and meaning.

During these 5 days, we will explore death as a friend, as a Zen Master, an immediate source of our own power and a direct path to lucidity, ever ready to awaken us. If we dare to stop running and face death…it will transform our lives profoundly.

We will examine existential questions such as:
* What is truly essential in my life?
* How can I deal with loss and grieving, accept change and dare to  embrace live and love fully
* What is my soul’s calling and journey?
* What responsibilities and projects/missions am I entrusted with this lifetime?

Working with people inevitably brings us face to face with essential and unavoidable situations that happens in the life of all of our clients. Death, birth, separation, a broken heart, losses, illness, grief, how to be with the unknown, liminal spaces and rebirth. These are often times when clients and often friends come and need support, understanding and love of a counsellor/therapist. I call this existential therapy. It involves navigating these profound and often life-altering issues.
We are all eventually confronted with these profound and often life changing issues. These are such rich times, yet in reality they are often hard to be with. In these days we will explore our own existential issues, and see how we can create a supportive and non-judgmental state of mind in which time and healing can occur. It is during these times, that I find therapy so unbelievably rewarding and enriching my life.

We will explore how to work with:
*Sudden death
*Grief
*Separation, broken hearts and endings
*Understanding the liminal space and Rites of passage. The power of rituals in the therapeutic context.
*Life transitions such as becoming a parent, aging, letting go of old identities and past loves.
*How to meet change
*How to face aloneness.

We will move deeply into meditation that will support our presence and ability to be aware of what is.  And of course, we will cry and laugh, and learn how to come out of isolation, how to be with friends, how to be vulnerable, and slowly learn to trust, instead of control the unknown and unknowable.
